Kasun’s story

Kasun (name has been changed to maintain confidentiality) is a 9 year old boy referred to us from Kurunegala presenting with fever and cervical lymph node enlargement for 2 weeks. In Kurunegala hospital child was operated and lymphnode was excised but the fever continued. At LRH we thoroughly investigated him and diagnosed to have Melioidosis (a rare Bacterial infection having serious complications such as Pneumonia etc.) by the paediatric medical team. The diagnosis itself is a challenge as it resembles tuberculosis. It can be aquired by coming into contact with contaminated soil and water. Children playing with them will have a high chance of acquiring the disease. Therefore educating the public regarding the history with regard to possibility of acquiring the disease through contact of soil and contaminated water is important.

So, Kasun was treated with IV antibiotocs and recovered completely and discharged.
