Minimal invasive surgery for the children at LRH

In Sri Lanka, 3D laparoscopy is available only at LRH. Laparoscopy surgeries commenced from 2003, and 3D laparoscopy surgeries started in 2014. Laparoscopy surgeries performed are pyeloplasty, imperforate anus, ureterolithotomy, appendicectomy, meckel’s diverticulum, diagnostic laparoscopy, ovarian cyst excision, ureteric reimplantation, nephrectomy, tracheoeosophageal fistula, Adrenelectomy, orchidoplexy. The latest addition to this is diaphragmatic hernia repair and choledochal cyst excision. We are proud to say that 6 weeks ago we performed 2 choledochal cyst excision laparoscopically with success by our surgical team at LRH.

Advantages are 3D laparoscope will give a better view with a 3D picture so that surgery can be performed with more accuracy and also allow more complicated cases to be done.

Choledochal cyst is a peculiar condition seen mostly in children where localize dilatation of bile ducts occur which can lead to infections, perforation of the cyst, stone formation and later could lead to cancer. Therefore, they need removal as early as possible. In open operations this requires larger incisions with its own disadvantages. Removal of the cyst will require complex procedures to allow bile flow from liver to the gut. Therefore, 3D laparoscopic surgeries have many advantages for little children who undergo complex operations. Our surgical team has always been on the lookout for new advances in Paediatric Surgery so that they could provide better service for the children in our country.
