Haematology

Haematology department of LRH provides clinical and laboratory services under one roof to children with wide range of blood related disorders. The department has several functional units; the laboratory service, Clinical service, Haemophilia centre and the upcoming haemopoietic stem cell transplant unit.
The Haematology laboratory provides 24 hour service through its main laboratory in the first floor of Surgical building and the OPD laboratory in the ground floor of OPD building. The main laboratory caters for inward children and also to children referred from all over the country for diagnosis of rare haematological diseases. The OPD laboratory caters for the clinics and OPD. The Medical laboratory technologists in the laboratory have received specialised training locally and overseas. In order to maintain high standards of analysis, we conduct regular internal quality assessment and participate in national external quality assessment programme conducted by MRI and UK-NEQAS for coagulation.

Haemophilia centre at LRH is the first designated haemophilia care centre in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1999 under the guidance of Dr Sudarma Vidyatilake, Consultant Haematologist. The centre provides specialized care for children with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders. The medical officer, nursing officers and the physiotherapist have had special training at overseas haemophilia centres, organized by World Federation of Haemophilia.

A centre dedicated for paediatric transplants, especially for non-malignant diseases is a need of the country and therefore a facility for allogenic bone marrow transplantation is to be established at LRH. The programme will be supported by the Haematology department of the Christian Medical College Vellore, India. A group of doctors and nurses have already been trained at CMC, Vellore. The infrastructure of this unit is at near completion. Registration of children for transplant has commenced.
The service is provided by the staff consisting of Consultant Haematologists, post graduate trainees in Clinical Haematology, Medical officers, Laboratory technologists, Orderlies and supporting staff. The staff of Haemophilia centre consists of one medical officer, two nursing officers, one physiotherapist and two assistance in addition to two consultant haematologists of the haematology unit.

The service provided by the laboratory covers a wide range of tests which are performed with fully automated equipment.
The laboratory offers routine and special haematological investigations with high degree of accuracy and within minimum turnaround time.
Apart from the routine and general haematology tests, we perform advanced bleeding disorder diagnosis, haemoglobinopathy diagnosis and flow cytometry for acute leukaemia.

Laboratory services
The laboratory offers routine and special haematological investigations with high degree of accuracy and within minimum turnaround time.
Clinical Services
We care for patients referred from the wards, outpatient department, clinics of LRH, and other hospitals for specialized haematological assessments including bone marrow biopsies and clinical management. They are investigated and managed while in their wards jointly with their primary clinicians or as out patients.
Haemophilia Centre
The services provided are outpatient management of bleeding episodes, administration of prophylaxis factor concentrate, immune tolerance induction therapy for children with inhibitors, physiotherapy, counselling and organising social support.
Haemophilia centre has a small dedicated area for the children to interact and play while they wait for their turn. It also has in-house reading material for children who are interested in reading. During school holidays art and craft classes are conducted for children by a volunteer teacher.
The centre organizes an annual event for the children to participate and show their talents. Every participant was given a gift to encourage them further.
Haemopoietic stem cell transplant programme
Registration of children for transplant has commenced.
We are also engaged in teaching and training of post graduate doctors in clinical haematology and transfusion medicine. The consultant haemtologists also take part in teaching activities for medical undergraduates and Paediatric post graduate trainees.
LRH Haematology laboratory also provide ‘bench training’ for MLT students.
