Health Education Unit
Health Education unit was established in year 2000 team consist of 2 medical officers, 1 nursing officer and 1 SKS at room No 18, Lady Ridgeway Hospital. Under the guidance of medical officers and in charge nursing officer we render our services throughout the year for patients and staff. At the beginning conducting programmes on Health Education and staff training programmes were the main functions of the Unit. Following the circular issued by Health Education Bureau in year 2007 we started conducting the Nutrition Clinic for Paediatric patients who were referred from clinics, OPD and Wards for malnourished under nourished and obese children. As a result of introduction of BP100 for the first time in Sri Lanka malnourished children were referred from other parts of the country (except North and East due to the war) were also treated by us with the collaboration of Nutrition Dept – MRI.
Establishment of Lactation Management Centre in year 2008 is another valuable service started by HEU in collaboration Family Health Beureu. Commencement of NCD (Non Communicable Diseases) staff training programmes, conducting NCD screening programmes for the staff was also done by HEU. At present Nutrition, NCD and Lactation Management Centre are functioning as separate units.
Medical Officer Health Education is the focal point appointed by Health Education Beureu / Ministry of Health who is responsible for all the staff training programmes done collaboration of ET & R.

Health Education Unit
- Establishment of location centre in year 2008 is another valuable service started by HEU in collaboration F.H.B.
- Pre Intern Programme for Paediatrics for the whole island started with collaboration of Ceylon College Paediatricians was conducted by Health Education and currently it is done at the provincial level.
- In service programmes for Nursing Officers, SKS, Paramedical staff, Clerical staff and also for newly appointed staff are organized by HEU.
- Also coordinate programmes with Infection Control Unit on infection prevention, hand hygienic procedures and especially during Epidemic such as COVID 19, Dengue, Influenza etc.
- Conduct programmes on safe blood transfusion in collaboration with Blood bank.
- Conduct NCB screening programme for the whole staff in the hospital.
- Conduct awareness and health educating programmes to the public privet institution and Schools health programmes on healthy life, Nutrition, NCD preventions etc on request.
- We work hand in hand with Metmadura organizing programmes on substance addiction for the staff.
- Distribution of posters, notices, etc provided by HEB, FHB, Epid Unit, Dengue Control Unit, Nutrition Coordination Division and MOH among the staff and patient waiting areas.
- Daily health education for Inward patients and their parents / guardians by a nursing officer in all units and wards in the hospital.
- Represent L.R.H. at medical exhibition yearly organized by MOH.
- Organizing events on special days such as New Year world children’s day, palliative day, and stoma care day.
- With the help of cancer control unit conducts screening programmes yearly on oral cancer, CA Cervix, CA Breast.
- Conducts awareness day programmes such as TB, HIV, Cancers, etc throughout the year and participating events such as walks and workshops on those days organized by MOH.
- Maintenance of Butterfly garden.
- Implementation of the Public address system in the OPD with financial and technical assistance from the Sri Lanka Institute of Engineers
