Paediatric Rheumatology and Rehabilitation
Our unit provides services for children with congenital and acquired rheumatologic conditions of autoimmune, vascular and neurological etiology. The unit comprises of a ward for inpatient care, physiotherapy unit, occupational therapy unit, out patient clinic and palliative care unit.
We get referrals from OPD, other wards of Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children and from other hospitals.
We provide holistic, family focused care to our patients with input from our multidisciplinary team which includes the consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation and the team, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and palliative care medical officer. We also get the help of social service officers, Child and adolescent Psychiatry unit and orthopaedic unit whenever their help is needed.
We work together with government and non-governmental organisations to provide orthoses, wheelchairs and other walking and standing aids as well as social and spiritual support to our patients and their families.
The work force consists of a consultant rheumatologist, medical officers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nursing sister, nursing officers and supportive staff.

Providing inpatient and outpatient services for children with congenital and acquired rheumatologic conditions of autoimmune, vascular and neurological etiology. We conduct special clinics as cerebral palsy clinic, juvenile idiopathic arthritis clinic, early international clinic and combined orthopaedic clinic. We also give our input for the myopathy clinic.
Palliative Care Unit
Established recently and we provide care for the patients and the families who are facing problems associated with progressive life limiting conditions.
We get referrals from Rheumatology, medical, surgical, cardiology, neurology and psychiatry wards of LRH. We assist with physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of our patients and their families and provide our support for breaking bad news, terminal discharges, end of life care, advanced care planning and many more other aspects.
The Physiotherapy Unit
Established in 1957 by Mr. M. A. Fernando. It has a main gymnasium, electrotherapy unit and outdoor therapeutic play area. Our patients are benefited with most advanced technological instruments as continuous passive motion machines, soft wave machines, ultrasound machines, wax bath, electrical stimulators interferential therapy machines, TENS etc. Approximately 300 inward and outdoor patients are treated per day for respiratory, neurological, rheumatologic and orthopaedic conditions.
Occupational Therapy Unit
Established in 1978 by Mrs. Sujatha Gunawardana who was the first occupational therapist in LRH. We receive patients from Cerebral palsy clinic, Early intervention clinic, Erb’s palsy clinic, orthopaedic clinic, myopathy clinic, cortical visual impairment clinic, burns unit, plastic surgery unit and other surgical and medical wards of LRH.
We are actively involved in giving training to medical undergraduates and postgraduate trainees. Our unit is also involved in researches related to Pediatric Rheumatology and Rehabilitation.
